PC manufacturer champions mobile operating system
Acer says it will launch a smartphone based on the Android operating system by the end of the year.
The PC manufacturer, which has only recently entered the mobile handset market, launched four smartphones based on the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system in March.
By turning its attention to Android and its associated applications it could help boost take-up of this operating system further. Sales of Android handsets have been slow and currently there are only two on the market, although more handsets are expected to be launched this year.
The PC manufacturer has joined the Open Handset Alliance, which developed Android. The organisation now has over 40 members, including mobile operators, handset manufacturers and software companies. This collaboration has led to the release of the Android 1.5 system.
