Companies to pool research into free on-demand broadband services
The BBC, ITV and BT have announced they will work together to develop free TV-on-demand services that use broadband technology.
The plans would mean the development of a new generation of subscription-free devices carrying free-to-air channels and a huge selection of on-demand TV services such as the BBC’s iPlayer and ITV Player.
The new devices would also offer the potential for films, shows and interactive content from a range of other providers to be made available in standard and high-definition formats. The aim is also to ensure that the free-to-air platforms Freeview and Freesat are viable in the future.
Michael Grade, ITV’s executive chairman said: "This proposal will bring catch-up from the PC to the TV set in your living room. To be successful it would have to be supported by a wide range of content providers, including internet service providers, broadcasters and device manufacturers."
The plans are subject to BBC Trust approval and public consultation but Mark Thompson, the director-general of the BBC said: "Audiences tell us that they want more services through their television set.
"I am pleased that the BBC is working with industry partners such as device manufacturers, ISPs and other content providers on proposals which will bring real benefits for consumers.
"We are building on a history of collaborating with, and supporting, the industry in research and development which includes Nicam stereo, Teletext and Freeview."

There will still be problems
There's no point talking about potential uses for broadband until BT upgrade the wires in it's network. Most people's "up to 8 meg" connection is still performing at under 2MBps.
