Kelkoo flags up green credentials

Price comparison site sets up hospitality suite for eco-friendly products

Kelkoo is revamping its website over the coming weeks, to include themed pages in time for the Christmas shopping rush.

Top of the agenda for the price comparison site is the launch of the Christmas  'Green Room' . Here the company will dedicate pages to products that manufacturers claim are environmentally friendly.

These will range from gadgets that meet new environmental guidelines, such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive (ROHS). This directive came into force on 1 July this year and is intended to complement the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive which will come into force on 1 January 2007.

It aims to get companies to reduce six of the hazardous materials, including lead, mercury and cadmium, which are commonly used in the manufacture of various types of electronic and electrical equipment.

Other featured green products will focus on energy saving devices including wind-up radios to solar-powered iPod chargers.

Kelkoo said it hoped to team up with an environmental organisation such as Friends of the Earth to ensure that the products that make it to the Green Room meet environmental standards.

In addition, Kelkoo is launching a Charity Christmas section. These pages will offer ideas of what to give someone who has everything, such as making a donation to charity or adopting an animal.

The site will be working alongside a number of well-known charities and will also be offering an unwanted gifts section - a place where information can be found on how to donate your unwanted gifts to charities.

The website will also include other essential tips for online Christmas shopping, such as when consumers can start pre-ordering 'hot' items as well as cut-off dates to ensure delivery in time for the holiday period.
