McAfee launches security software for Mac users

McAfee has released two different security software packages for Mac users.

McAfee Internet Security for Mac includes the company’s Site Advisor technology that helps protect users from malicious websites, browser exploits and notifies users if an ecommerce site has been scanned by McAfee for potential vulnerabilities.

The two-way firewall monitors all data entering and leaving the Mac and blocks hackers from accessing the computer. The software, which will cost £49.95 also scans and removes Windows and Mac-based viruses, spyware and adware.

The company has also released a package that includes parental control and protection features.

McAfee Family Protection for Mac offers web blocking using keyword search filtering, allowing parents to block up to 35 different categories of content; preventing children from visiting sites related to topics such as drugs or pornography.

The software can also generate activity reports so parents can monitor their children’s internet activity and the websites visited.

McAfee said the reports are designed to empower parents to teach their kids how to safely use the Internet. Instant notifications can be sent by email or SMS if a child tries to access sites parents consider inappropriate.

Parents can set time limits and block programs they don’t want their children to download. The software will work on Mac OS X 10.5 or later and cost £29.99.
