18-year-old pleads guilty to harassment after writing death threat online

An 18-year-old woman has been sentenced to three months in a young offenders' institution for posting a death threat on the social networking site Facebook.

On 12 July, Keely Houghton posted a message on the site: "Keeley is going to murder the bitch. She is an actress. What a f***ing liberty. Emily f***head Moore."

She pleaded guilty to a charge of harassment at Worcester Crown Court.

Ms Houghton was also banned from contacting her victim, Ms Moore, for five years.

District Judge Bruce Morgan told Houghton “Since Emily Moore was 14 you have waged compelling threats and violent abuse towards her. Bullies are by their nature cowards, in school and society... On this day you did an act of gratuitous nastiness to satisfy your own twisted nature."

The court heard that Houghton had two previous convictions relating to Ms Moore, including one for assaulting her in 2005.

Emma Jane Cross, Chief Executive of the charity Beatbullying, said "Cyber-bullying is a worrying and fast growing trend which can be more harmful than typical schoolyard bullying.

"However, the solution is not to limit young people’s internet access and phone usage. Instead, social networking sites like Facebook, along with the Government and charities like Beatbullying, must work together to tackle the real root of the problem, the bullying itself."

Over a third of young people surveyed by the charity said that they had been bullied online.

Facebook bully

Hmmmm - 3 months? Then What? She is obviously out of control and the judge is right - Twisted - so exactly what will 3 months do to change that?? She will just come out more resentful towards the same girl - which is dangerous in itself!! Something a little harsher is needed - as it was not the first time she has bullied this girl - a Longer time away - but in a mental facility - also needs to be seen by a Psychiatrist - basically she needs some sort of treatment LONG TERM - but then again that does not always work - But hell - Something More needs to be done and 3 months is not enough!!!!

and my bully gets let off by the lousy cps

Last year i had a series of bullies attacking me on a website, it went on for several years. One of them was arrested in 2008. Why did the cps drop the case yet support this person and put her bully behind bars where all bullies belong.

Prison sentence .... About time too!

This should be an example to other bullies out there who use the likes of Facebook, Myspace, MSN and other social type websites/programs to harass and frighten others. Bullying has moved from the playground to text messaging and now online .... some of the victims of this type of bullying must feel so helpless as the bully can post what they like on their page, status or profile knowing its there for the victim to see. I advise anybody who is being targetted in this way to take screenshots and keep all evidence .... contact beatbullying for help ... don't let the bullies get away with it!
