Ofcom has joined an initiative to educate consumers about online safety.

The telecommunications industry regulator has announced that it will be sponsoring the Get Safe Online website to highlight internet safety issues.

Get Safe Online was launched in 2005 and is run by the Government and the Serious Organised Crime Agency. It is also sponsored by retail, technology and finance companies.

It gives consumers advice about how to shop safely online, how to protect their PCs and ways to avoid becoming victims of ID theft.

Robin Blake, head of media literacy at Ofcom, said: "Technology is now an integral part of everyday life. To take full advantage of the increasing opportunities available online, it is essential that people have the skills and confidence to protect themselves and those they are responsible for from potentially harmful or offensive materials.

"Ofcom is delighted to support the work of Get Safe Online to make online experiences safer and more enjoyable."
