A voluntary code that will help consumers be better informed about the speed of their net connection has come into force.

Last year Computeractive’s Crystal Clear broadband campaign, called on Ofcom to make internet service providers (ISPs) offer customers clear information about the actual speed they can expect before they sign a contract.

The Ofcom-backed code of practice was drawn up in response to its own research, which found consumers were confused by adverts that promised broadband speeds that few consumers could achieve.

It will require ISPs to give details of any 'traffic management' systems that can affect users’ broadband speeds and give new customers an accurate estimate of the maximum speed their line can support.

They must also explain how technical issues could slow speeds and give advice about how to combat these problems.
