Venture to develop free TV and other online content via broadband
Channel 4 and Talktalk have signed up to a venture that will develop the next platform needed to deliver free multimedia content via broadband.
The two companies join the BBC, ITV, Five and BT in committing to Project Canvas, which will create a technology, subject to approval by the BBC Trust that will be the upgrade to Freeview and Freesat.
This new platform will be used by internet-connected devices to deliver TV programmes and other online content over broadband links; on-demand and subscription-free.
Project Canvas project director Richard Halton, speaking on behalf of partners BBC, ITV, Five and BT, said: “Project Canvas can help secure the future of free-to-air broadcasting, as well as create an opportunity for a wide range of public services and new commercial models to thrive through an open platform. We’re delighted that Channel 4 and Talktalk have joined the project.”
The BBC Trust is currently consulting on the proposals and is expected to make a decision later this year.
