Email contains link to site offering bogus jailbreaking program
Criminals are targeting iPhone users with a Trojan that attempts to steal victims’ bank details and other personal information, warned Bitdefender.
The security firm said that Trojan.Generic.3010833 sent to people's email accounts advertises itself as a free jailbreaking program for people who want to unlock their iPhone so they can download apps not approved by Apple.
There are various freeware programs available on the internet that will do this. But Bitdefender said since it became legal in the US to unlock a mobile phone at the end of last month, the criminals have jumped on the bandwagon.
The company said the scam starts when a user is sent an email advertising a link to a jailbreaking program. Once the link is clicked, an .exe file attempts to download onto the victim’s computer. When saved and run it opens the door for the Trojan to download.
This then allows the hacker to intercept the victim’s visited sites, and harvest usernames, passwords and bank account information, such as PIN and bank account numbers and passwords. Bitfefender said the details are then sent to a Hotmail email account set up by the criminals.
