Symantec has launched a guide that advises the public on ways in which they can protect themselves against the threats surrounding social networking sites.

Own Your Space aims to educate both teenagers and their parents on the types of threats young people potentially face online and gives users information about the tools required to safely use social networking sites.

The book also provides parents with discussion opportunities for their teenagers on the need for individual responsibility and caution while surfing online. It also gives parents tips on how to keep their children safe from online predators as well as steps on how to filter unwanted content such as pornography.

In addition, readers will find explanations and illustrations on how to keep their computers free of threats such as spyware, worms and viruses and advice to ensure they do not become victims of email phishing scams.

The book, written by Linda McCarthy, an executive security advisor at the Office of the CTO at Symantec, is priced at £14 and comes with a trial copy of Norton Internet Security. A portion of the proceeds also goes to a charity which works to educate teens about internet security.
