Students in higher education are to be offered a huge discount on Microsoft's Windows 7 operating system.

The discount will apply to pre-orders of either the Home Premium or Professional versions of Windows 7, which will be available from 1 October until 3 January 2010.

Applicants with a valid .EDU email address (an email address given by the college or university, such as name@leeds.ac.uk) can buy Windows 7 for £30 - a fifth of the suggested retail price.

Windows 7 includes touch-screen controls and a range of other new features such as Libraries, a revamped Taskbar and new tools to make home networking simpler.
