BT has launched a free service, which will give visitors and residents in Westminster information about things to see and do in the area.

BT Myplace can be accessed on any Wifi-enabled mobile device or laptop computer by people in a BT Openzone hotspot. It is claimed the service covers six miles of London, including the West End.

After registering preferences such as favourite food, shops or activities, users are sent nearby recommendations from companies such as Time Out, Love Theatre, Kodak, Audible and Londonpass, based on their location. This is detected by the wireless infrastructure.

Chris Bruce, general manager, BT Openzone, said: "Unlike a classic city guide, BT Myplace is personal to you. It doesn't tie you to a fixed location and because it is delivered over Wifi rather than 3G, it offers a faster and more reliable internet connection that can be picked used on thousands of devices."

The service can also be accessed on a 3G device but people will have to pay their operator's network charges. Those using this connection will also be given a default starting point in Leicester Square from which they can zoom in and out to find their exact location.

Myplace is being launched as a six-month free trial.
