Computers you can wear could be closer than you think. IBM has come up with a futuristic wearable PC running Windows 98. Instead of a relying on a screen, this PC comes with an eye-mounted viewer with built-in headphones that can be worn as a headpiece. The eyepiece fits over one eye and is equivalent to looking at a 10in screen a foot away, said IBM. Amazingly, the screen resolution is 800 x 600 pixels and can display up to 1.4 million colours. IBM's miniature PC also boasts 64Mb of memory, a USB port and a tiny 340Mb hard disk drive. The system will run for up to three hours at a time.Controlling the PC still requires a small attachable keyboard, but IBM said that it may, in future, use its ViaVoice speech-recognition software.Although it has yet to announce pricing and availability outside of Japan, where it is expected to appear in the first quarter of 2000, IBM has run a series of adverts in the US to gauge demand for such a product. It has not yet announced if and when the portable PC will come to the UK.IBM: 0990 426426, www.ibm.co.uk.
