A touchscreen helps athletes keep track of their laps and running history
Tomtom and Nike have collaborated to create a GPS-enabled sports watch.
The Nike+ SportWatch GPS running watch, unveiled at the 2011 International Consumer Electronics Show, has been designed to be simple for people to use.
It has only three buttons and makes good use of the customisable touchscreen layout for navigation, setting laps, running history, a heart-rate monitor and run reminders.
During a run, the device captures location information while showing runners their time, distance, pace, and calories burned. Throughout the run, the Tomtom GPS receiver works in tandem with the optional shoe-based Nike+ Sensor to deliver pace and distance data.
Users can also upload and keep a record of their progress online on the Nike Plus site by plugging the watch into any USB port on a Mac or PC. Information stored on the watch automatically transfers to the site letting users see the GPS mapping, total miles, pace and elevation data for their most recent run.
Athletes who want to get the most out of their run and from the watch can also access the huge online catalogue of run routes logged by Nike and published by other runners on streets and trails around the world.
The watch will also continue to record training details indoors and away from a GPS signal making it ideal for the gym as well.
The watch is scheduled to go on sale in the UK from 1 April. No price has been confirmed or announced but it is expected the cost will be around £200.
