Treasures app lets people view famous manuscripts and historical texts
iPhone, iPad and Android smartphone users can now access British Library collections using its Treasures app.
The Treasures app includes literary, historical, music-related and scientific documents along with "illuminated manuscripts and sacred texts". High-resolution images of documents and manuscripts are included allowing the user to zoom in and explore the texts.
The app includes Charles Dickens' handwritten draft of Nicholas Nickelby and Jane Austen's early writings. There is also an original Magna Carta of 1215 and Elizabeth I's famous Tilbury speech given before the Spanish Armada.
Alongside the orginal texts, the app includes sound recordings and videos from British Library curators, linguist David Crystal and TV presenter Ben Fogle.
The British Library said the Treasures app will be "regularly updated with information". It is available now for £1.19 on Android and iPhone and £2.39 on iPad.
