HTC Flyer wings its way into Android tablet market

Smartphone manufacturer announces tablet with seven-inch display

HTC has entered 'the war of the tablets' by announcing its first Android device; the HTC Flyer.

The tablet will have a seven-inch display and a 1.5GHz processor. It will respond to either a touchscreen pen or finger movements. The Flyer will use a modified version of the HTC Sense user interface, which is used on the company's smartphones.

HTC has also developed new software for the Flyer.

HTC Scribe combines written note-taking with a sound-recording service, synching the two together so that tapping on a word in written notes will play the audio that was recorded at that exact time. The service will also sync with appointments and calendars stored on the tablet.

A new video download service, HTC Watch, will have on-demand downloading of high-definition movies. Specifics of which film studios will be supplying the content are yet to be announced.

HTC also announced that it was including the Onlive cloud-based gaming service with the tablet.

No price has been announced yet, but HTC did confirm that it will be available globally during the second quarter of 2011.
