Software giant wants to reduce the worldwide use of its 10-year-old browser
Microsoft has launched a new website in an attempt to wean the millions of people still using Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) off the aged browser.
Currently an astonishing one in four Internet Explorer users around the world continue to use IE6; despite the fact it does not support modern web standards, is insecure and, according to Microsoft, "provides an unsatisfactory user experience".
The IE6 countdown site offers advice to people on how to dissuade their friends and family from using the browser. It also hopes to persuade more websites to drop support for the browser.
The site will also monitor the progress of moving the worldwide market share of IE6 to less than one per cent.
Ahead of the upcoming web release of Intenet Explorer 9 (IE9), Microsoft is committed to reducing IE6 share as quickly as possible. It is encouraging users to upgrade to a more modern browser, such as IE8 or try the test version of IE9.
