Information Commissioner's Office wants manufacturers of Wifi kit to explain risks of unsecured networks to consumers

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has published new guidelines explaining how to check the security settings on Wifi routers.

The guidelines from the ICO about Wifi security settings is available to download.

Advice ranges from setting up a strong password to stopping other people accessing the network and making sure the information sent over the device is encrypted.

The privacy watchdog developed the guidance after Yougov research it commissioned found that four in 10 people who use Wifi at home do not understand how to change their network's security settings.

The ICO is also calling for internet service providers (ISPs), retailers and manufacturers to do more to make sure the information supplied with their Wifi equipment is clear to the end user.

The privacy watchdog also wants these companies to explain the risks to people about using an unsecured connection.
