Ofcom says licences will be opened up on a region-by-region basis
Ofcom has opened the door for more Individuals and community groups to apply for a community radio licence.
The communications regulator said there are seven regions and the applications will open on a region-by-region basis. However, potential applicants need to realise that not all areas will be suitable for the FM frequencies these stations use.
Ofcom said these stations form an important part of local communities and the chance to apply for a licence reflected the significant interest expressed by individuals and groups.
Typically these radio stations cover a small geographical area of up to 5km and are run on a not-for-profit basis. They reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests.
For example, some stations play urban or experimental music, while others are aimed at younger people, religious communities or the Armed Forces and their families.
Applications can now be made for licences in Wales and south west England. Scotland is second in the process, with applications opening before the end of 2011.
This will be followed by Northern Ireland in the first half of 2012 and then four English regions – one every six months – that finish with the South East.
