The Royal Wedding is almost here, so in preparation we go through some of the specially themed technology available
The Royal Wedding is set to be one of the biggest events of the year, with well over a billion people from around the world tuning in to watch. As a consequence, there's rather a lot of memorabilia you can buy to help mark the special occasion. If you're not into bunting, mugs, tea-towels and funny hats, then why not invest in some Royal Wedding tech?
Somewhat inevitably, the wedding has resulted in some rather dubious spin-offs and money-making ideas. The event is already set to be a technological affair with Youtube, Flickr and Twitter getting in on the act, according to Clarence House, use of these websites will make for "the most digital and interactive coverage of a Royal Wedding to date."
So perhaps it doesn't come as a major surprise that you can celebrate the impending nuptials by investing in some Royal Wedding themed technology. Here are some of the ‘highlights'.
Picture the scene; you're at a Royal Wedding Street Party, the bunting is out, the streets are filled with people celebrating and enjoying the atmosphere, everything has a Royal Wedding gloss... then your phone starts to ring. Wouldn't it be perfect if your phone could be Royal Wedding themed too? Well, it can. No, really.
The special edition Royal Wedding Phone, made by Alcatel, comes in a commemorative box and features a screensaver of Prince William and Catherine Middleton. For some reason there's also a God Save the Queen ringtone. There's even a ‘symbolic inscription' of the initials of the happy couple joined together. Oddly, the product description states that there's ‘a handy torch to help you find your way back after the big celebration'.
If you'd quite like to keep your old phone, why not encase it in some Royal Wedding themed glory? There are quite a lot of Royal Wedding iPhone cases available, but these four are up there with the best; ‘Regal Heart', ‘Modern Britannia', ‘Classic Monogram' and ‘Well Wishes'. They all cost £29.99 and all feature either a picture of the happy couple or an inscription to mark their special day.
Maybe a bit more of a stretch, but while enjoying the Royal Wedding you might need power for various battery-using products. Now, you could power these with standard AA batteries, but that wouldn't really be in the spirit of things. Thankfully, Usbcell have the answer: The Royal Wedding Souvenir Special AA battery. The AA battery can be used like any normal AA battery, but it can also be flipped open and charged again using a USB port on a computer.
Naturally, if you are heading to London for the Royal Wedding you will be making use of the capital's extensive travel network. The best (and cheapest) way to do this is by using an Oyster Card. Disastrously, a standard Oyster Card has no mention of the Royal Wedding whatsoever.
Fear not though, Transport for London has come to the rescue with a magnificent Royal Wedding themed Oyster Card that features a picture of beaming William and Catherine as well the date of the wedding. It even has the endorsement of London Mayor Boris Johnson who recommends it to the happy couple as the best way of getting around the city on their big day:
"I would also recommend the card to the happy couple as the cheapest, easiest way of getting around this city, especially as it bears their resemblance."
Then, at the end of a very long weekend of celebrating and delighting friends and strangers alike with your Royal Wedding paraphernalia, you are probably tired and in need of something relaxing to watch on the TV. This, of course, is the perfect opportunity to sit back and enjoy the William and Kate Royal Wedding Movie, shot on location in LA and featuring London buses driving on the wrong side of the road and mountains in Gloucestershire. As well as being available on DVD, William and Kate: The Movie is also getting an airing in the UK on Channel 5. It will be broadcast at 15:15 on 29 April.
