Philips goes Android-crazy at IFA

Launches new docks, speakers and Android-powered music players

Philips Android Dock
Philips launched many products for Android at IFA 2011, including a range of speaker docks.

This year's IFA technology show might be swamped with products designed to work with the iPhone, but Philips was showing off a range of alternatives that work with Android phones.

The company has made a range of Fidelio speaker docks for iPhone and iPod for some time, but now it has added several models for Android. Instead of the iPod dock connector these have a fitted mini-USB plug, and the plug can be moved and rotated to accommodate most Android phones - even if the USB socket is on one side.

We tried it with a few handsets, and found that the dock system worked well. As well as a top of the range AS851 version we tried a mid-range model that should cost around £60, and there's also a smaller alarm clock sized product.

On the larger side of things the company was also showing off an Android-compatible soundbar system for home cinema. The CSS5123 system includes a separate subwoofer, and connects to WiFi networks.

Finally, the company also showed some Android-powered MP3 players. The GoGear Connect can download apps from the Android market, surf the web and play music and video files. It will be available from October.
