Nine communities to be on line with fibre-optic broadband by Christmas
BT has pushed forward its roll out of superfast broadband in Cornwall by at least three months.
The first major phase of the Superfast Cornwall initiative has kicked off ahead of schedule, with nine communities in the east of the county expected to get their fibre connections by December, and one over a year earlier.
Liskeard, Callington, Launceston, Dobwalls, Bude, Kilkhampton, Marhamchurch (near Widemouth Bay), Drakewalls (near Gunnislake) and North Hill (near Coads Green were previously due to ‘go live' before the end of March 2012. Meanwhile Dobwalls which had actually been scheduled for 2013 will also be included.
They will join the Chacewater/Chiverton Cross, St Agnes, St Day, Portreath, Devoran, Leedstown, Stenalees and Par areas which are already connected as part of the initial pilot phase of the initiative.
BT said this means a total of 90,000 Cornish homes and businesses will have fibre connections.
The Superfast Cornwall initiative is a partnership between BT, the European Union, Cornwall Council and Cornwall Development Company responsible for constructing the new network.
Up to £53.5 million of the funding is coming from ERDF Convergence, the largest ever single European investment in broadband infrastructure, while BT is investing up to £78.5 million.
Eventually around 130,000 kilometres of optical fibre will be laid, 100 telephone exchanges upgraded and nearly 500 new green roadside cabinets installed.
BT said by the end of 2014 at least 80 per cent of premises in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly would have access to fibre broadband, making the area one of the best connected places in the world.
Chris Ridgers, the portfolio holder for economy and regeneration for Cornwall Council, said: "We have been committed to starting the first main phase of the superfast broadband roll-out in the East of Cornwall, and I'm delighted that it's coming sooner than previously expected to these communities.
"This is great news – it will give local businesses a much-deserved boost and help the economy of South East Cornwall at a crucial time of the year."

Wrong priorities
According to the samknows website there is no indication of when it will be going live in St Austell and I am mystified why BT are concentrating on areas of low population with nothing much other than fog and sheep. How many sheep around Stenalees do you expect to sign up for fibre optic?
