New app has panic button so passengers can summon help in the event of an emergency
A new app that will make it safer for people, especially women, to take minicabs has been created.
The Safer Minicabs app, which was designed as a solution to taxi-related sexual offences, provides users with a panic button. This links straight to Safer Minicabs and to the minicab office through which a car was booked so people can call for help in the event of an emergency.
In addition, customer location is tracked by the office whilst in the minicab during the journey.
Another bonus for people searching for a cab late at night, it allows them to book licensed minicabs within 60 seconds. It will also let them compare prices so they can find the cheapest fare or the company that can respond in the fastest time.
The app, which currently only covers the London licensed mini cab market, has the support of the Metropolitan Police Camden and Camden Council.
But it has won its creator, Jayesh Hirani, from Wembley a Shell LiveWIRE Grand Ideas Award. Mr Hirani had been given £1,000 to develop Safer Minicabs which is currently available for Android smartphones and iPhones. There are plans to develop the app for Blackberry phones and to cover more cities in the UK

Rubbish app!!
Yet another booking app that promises the world but delivers much less. Firstly; I tried this app 3 times and every time I waited for the 60 seconds to 'get prices and book' it came back as 'no one's available' Secondly. The panic button. Whilst I see value in it if it was used in a hailed taxi (as there would be no record of me entering the vehicle) the fact it is booked through this app would suggest 2 things. 1) the driver must be totally stupid as she/he is knowingly trying to attack someone that has booked through a trackable app, and 2) makes rhe assumption i'm being attacked and I have the ability to get my phone out, go to the app and hit the panic button. Therefore it doesn't make anyone safer. Just tells them a crime is 'in progress'. Helpful for follow up but does NOT make anyone safer. This is 'just' another booking app. Trying to suggest it is doing something good. Surely the app being trackable doesn't need a panic button. It's recorded anyway. It surely just acuses the genuine drivers (who would be a driver for the app) of being a wannabe criminal, no!? This app is no better than using londons cabwise scheme. At least that offers a service when it's used!! Failing that, yell thomsonlocal or google for me!!

They don't get it!
This developer clearly doesn't understand the problems in the industry. Booked vehicles or licensed taxis are typically the safest forms of transport. This app labels the whole industry as 'unsafe'. The real problem is unlicensed drivers who pretend to be licensed. So how can this app be any safer looking at their website they are just an operator. No 'safer' than booking through any other licensed operator.

Nice app!!
I used the app for the first time. Believe it or not, I managed to book it on my first try. I’m happy with the price and service. I'll definitely use it next time.
