After recent acquisition of Play.com, Japanese company Rakuten takes over Kobo
Ebook manufacturer Kobo has been bought by Japanese company Rakuten.
Rakuten, Japan's largest online retailer, recently purchased Play.com and has now added Kobo to its list of acquisitions that also includes other online retailers in Europe. The deal, which is worth $315m (£197m) will see Rakuten acquire 100 per cent of shares in Kobo.
Kobo is currently partnered with WH Smith in the UK, with the highstreet retailer selling its ereaders in store and on its website. The WH Smith ebook store also links to the Kobo online store.
In a statement, Rakuten said that the acquisition of Kobo would help enable it to expand its ebook business.
