Social networking site would be required to obtain express consent from users before using personal data
Facebook is likely to have to ask users to opt in to any changes it makes to its members' settings.
The social networking site has been under investigation by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) over privacy concerns and charges that the company misled users about how it would use their personal information.
According to reports from The Wall Street Journal a settlement is near to being approved by the FTC through which Facebook will be required to obtain express consent from a user before it shares any of that person's data
So for example if a person updates or uploads more pictures or information and says it can only be viewed by a select group, Facebook would not be allowed to take this information and make it available to anyone else.
It is a big change for Facebook which has previously announced changes without seeking consent and the settlement has been welcomed by privacy groups.
There has been no comment from Facebook so far but it is believed the settlement only needs rubber stamping by the FTC.
