Evolution of voice recognition app for Android handsets
Google could be readying its rival to Apple's Siri voice recognition system for release next year.
Reports indicate the search engine could name the app Majel after Majel Barrett-Roddenberry; better known as the voice of the computer on the Star ship Enterprise and as Nurse Christine Chapel.
Google's Matias Duarte said in an online interview with tech website Slashgear that the company was taking an approach that was "more like Star Trek". Apple's Siri lets iPhone users send messages, place phone calls and more by speaking into the phone and if the app needs more information to function properly asks questions.
It is anticipated that Majel, will be an evolution of Google's current Voice Actions and be similar to Siri in the way it works.
An initial release may be made available very early in the New Year.
