AppLink software enables drivers to launch and manage apps in-car
Ford has bolstered its Sync technology with a new tool that enables drivers to use smartphone apps while behind the wheel.
The car-maker's AppLink software means drivers can connect Bluetooth-enabled smartphones to the vehicle's interface and access apps from the driver's controls, or by using voice commands. Apple's iPhone can be linked to the car's interface via a USB connection built into the dashboard.
Ford said AppLink would enable drivers to use apps safely, from music to news and navigation, because there would be no need to touch the phone and distract the driver from the road ahead.
UK police forces maintain that voice control alone is not a defence against driving without due care and attention.
Ford discussed AppLink at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Our apologies for the loud music over the interview, which was pumping out at the Ford stand all day.
