Technology news site TheVerge has claimed to have seen an intermal memo which showed that Microsoft has"discussions with an important European partner" and decided to "discontinue the use" of the Metro branding.

It is rumoured that the dispute may be with a German retail company Metro AG, which own a trademark on the "Metro" name.
Microsoft however said the change was always on the cards and in a statement said: "We have used Metro style as a codename during the product development cycle across many of our product lines."
