Turn your iPhone into a home phone, complete with free 0800 calls

BT SmartTalk app uses Wifi or mobile data connection to link iPhone to BT home phone package

BT SmartTalk
International calls back to the UK could be free using the new BT app

BT has released SmartTalk, an iPhone and Android app that links a user's phone with their landline calling plan.

The app allows people on BT home phone contracts to link this to their iPhone and be billed as if they are using their landline. It can be used anywhere in the world and all calls will be charged at the same rate available on a customer's landline deal.

The app is free to download from the Apple App Store and works over either Wifi or a mobile data connection. It is avialable for iPhone and compatible Android devices.

When travelling abroad the app could be used to call home for the same price as a UK call, which could be included in some BT packages. Calls to 0800 numbers would be free, while 0845 and 08700 numbers - expensive to call from mobiles - would be considerably cheaper.

People receiving calls made using the app will see the mobile phone number rather than the landline number. All SmartTallk calls are also itemised on BT bills.

BT said that its broadband customers would also be able to use the service on any of its 7.5 million Wifi hotspots.
