PC help: Stop starting

Stop unwanted programs from starting automatically

It can be quite frustrating waiting for ‘start-up’ programs to load when you have just logged in, especially if using a slower PC.

However, there is a way to selectively disable such programs, to see if any one in particular is responsible for significant slow-down.

Note, though, that this tip is unsuitable for complete PC novices. If you’re a confident user, click on Start and select Run. Type ‘msconfig’ (without the quotes) and hit Enter.

In the System Configuration Window, click on the Startup tab and click to remove the ticks from any unnecessary or unwanted programs entries. Be careful though – don’t uncheck any crucial system startup procedures, mainly located at the top of the list.

To reactivate a start-up program, just follow this tip again.
