We explain how to permanently delete emails in Outlook Express

Q After reading my emails in Outlook Express, I save the ones I want to keep to the My Documents folder and delete the rest, so I don’t have any left at the end of each day.

However, every so often I get a message that says: ‘If you want to save some space, you can delete some emails – it should only take a few seconds’.

I send all of my unwanted emails to the Recycle Bin, so why do I keep seeing this message?

A Deleting emails in Outlook Express does not actually delete messages. Rather, emails are marked as ‘ready to be deleted’ by moving them from the Inbox to the Deleted Items folder. Like old files that float around in the Windows Recycle Bin, this makes it easier to recover emails that may be accidentally deleted.

To completely delete emails and free up space, you will need to periodically empty the Deleted Items in Outlook Express by right-clicking it and selecting Empty ‘Deleted Items’ Folder. Once a week should be often enough.
