Workshop: Open and create portable XPS documents

Sharing documents? The Microsoft XPS format offers an alternative to using Adobe PDF files

Adobe rules the roost when it comes to distributing documents electronically.

Its PDF documents can include fancy formatting, photos and other graphics and the free Reader program allows people to open and read these documents, even if they don’t have access to the software that created the originals.

However, although the Reader program is free, the one necessary to create PDF files is not; hence the interest in Microsoft’s XPS file format.

While it doesn’t include some of the fancier features of PDFs, it is included with Windows Vista and is also available as a free download for Windows XP users.

In this Workshop, we’ll look at the version of the XPS Viewer program that works alongside Internet Explorer, so it’s possible to display XPS documents directly within the web browser.
