Security software for Windows 98 SE

Which software packages still support Windows 98?

Q Can you advise of any applications that provide security software, as it appears that AVG and other companies no longer support Windows 98 SE.
Alan Potts

A There are still security programs that will run on Windows 98. The Avast anti-virus software will work on older versions of Windows, including 98SE. The Jetico Firewall will provide protection from hackers.

We don’t recommend using Windows 98 (or 95 and Me) online because they are no longer supported by Microsoft. This means that vulnerabilities are not fixed, potentially putting the computer at risk online. If the cost of buying a new computer is too great, Ubuntu Linux is a secure alternative to Windows 98. The most recent version can be downloaded from our website. Older computers may run better with Xubuntu, a slightly different version specially designed for older computers.

What exactly are win-98 current vulnerabilities?

It was mentioned in the previous comment that the continued use of windows 98 is not recommended because it is no longer supported by MS and that any security vulnerabilities it may have are not being patched. It's my understanding that all known security vulnerabilities that were known as of June 2006 have been patched, and that there are relatively few, if any, new vulnerabilities that have been discovered. In addition, many, most or all new malware that has been analyzed seems to be able to function as intended only on NT-based operating systems (2k, XP, etc) and NOT on windows 9x. If true, that would make the advice to not use win-98 wrong or ill-advised on the basis that it has unpatched vulnerabilities or that current malware will actually run correctly on it.

Keep using Windows 98SE

Here is is in March of 2010 and I have revived on old Laptop with Windows 98SE. I maxed out the memory, found an open source browser, anti virus and I use an older version of Zone Alarm firewall. Being that 98SE has wireless capability that was the only reason worth doing any of it and it sure is much cheaper than buying a netbook or low end laptop. It really doesn`t take a very fast processor to surf the web but you and also block flash ads for an even faster browsing experience if you like. I will only use the PC for surfing, listening to music and maybe watching DVD movies so it is well worth it if you don`t have the buy the laptop in the first place. I spent $15 on the memory,$20 on a wired ethernet card and $10 on a wireless Airport card. That is less than $50 to be up and running!

You must have a firewall running at all times, but apart from that having more than one anti-virus system running is likely to cause conflict and 'false alerts'
