Customise icons or use The Gimp to make it easier to find folders
Even if you are careful to keep files in well-named folders it can be hard to find them when the number of folders reaches a certain point. My solution is to change the icon for the folders so they stand out from others.
Right-click on a folder and then left-click on Properties. Click on the Customize tab and then on the Change button. There are lots of icons to choose from.
Alternatively you can make your own with software such as The Gimp or find more on the internet.
Remember to resize the images to a square of no more than 256x256 pixels. You can also change the icons for shortcuts except the ‘Change Icon’ button is in the ‘Shortcut’ tab.
It’s also possible to change icons to mark a folder as safe to delete or requiring backup. For more information on Vista icons click here.
