Convert Midi files to play on a music CD
Q I compose music that is saved as Midi files. They play in Windows Media Player. How can I convert the files to create a music CD?
Malcolm Fisher
A The problem is music in the Midi format is different to that of CDs. A Midi file will tell the computer to play a middle C by a clarinet but the CD describes the actual sound.
You do not say what software you are using for the composition but most Midi editors come with an option to export to audio.
The quality of the finished file will depend on the Midi sounds built into the computer, also known as instruments. The most basic of these can sound quite disappointing so it is worth obtaining some better ones.
If you can cope with the 2GB download, there is a collection of good-quality Midi instruments available free from Yellow Tools.
It can work as a standalone program or within your existing music software if it supports the VST music technology.
