Can I stop Word spellchecking hyperlinks?

Find out how to remove a hyperlink from copy in Microsoft Word

q-a-logo

Q Having copied a web address into a Microsoft Word document it has been formatted as a hyperlink. I have tried to remove this by right-clicking on the link but all I get are the spelling options.

Robert Undercroft

A Word does not combine the different menus that can be shown on a right-click even if more than one is relevant.

The spelling menu takes priority over the hyperlink menu so either click on part of the web link that does not have a wavy red underline or select the Ignore All option in the menu. You may also have to ignore the grammar warning before the Remove hyperlink option is shown.

Alternatively, you can stop Word from spellchecking web links altogether. Click on the Tools menu and then on Options. Click on the Spelling & Grammar tab and then in the box labelled Ignore Internet and file addresses so that the tick disappears. Click on OK to save the changes.
