Managing fonts
Once installed start Cfont Pro and the list of fonts installed on your PC will appear on the left of the screen. You can click on the name of each font to see a sample of it in the main window.

If you would like to compare two or more fonts at the same time, first look just beneath the list of fonts on the left for a small tick box labelled ‘Custom proof sheet’.

Tick this and each individual font gets its own tick box; place a tick next to the fonts you wish to compare, go to the Display menu and click ‘Preview selected fonts’.

If you want to examine the selection on paper rather than on the screen, go to the Font menu and select Print Display.

The preview is set to display a mixture of letters and numbers in the chosen font in upper and lower cases called an alphanumeric display.

If you want to see only letters or view the font entirely in upper case, go to the toolbar at the top of the window and locate a dropdown menu labelled Display Text.

Click it and try out the options, returning to AlphaNumeric if you want the original view back.

Too many fonts can slow down your word processor and make it harder to choose when there are lots of unwanted fonts in the font menu. Uninstalling fonts is not hard.

If there is any chance you may want the font later on, copy the font out of this folder first. Left-click on it once to select it and then press the Ctrl and C keys together to copy it. Left-click on the Start button and then My Documents.

You may want to create a new folder just for these fonts. Once copied, the font can be deleted from this folder. You may need to restart any open programs for the font changes to show in them.

In Windows Vista, left-click on the Start button and select Control Panel. Click on Appearance and Personalization followed by Fonts.

Windows XP is similar: click on the Start button, then Control Panel and then on Fonts. A window will appear showing all the fonts stored on the computer. Click on a font, press the Alt key to show the menus, click on the File menu and then on Delete.

Font sites
Cfont Pro can be used to install and uninstall fonts and is better than the Windows font tool.

There are lots of websites that offer fonts; some charge a fee while others don’t. Unless you’re familiar with font websites we suggest that you download only from the sites listed here.

There are 8,967 fonts on DA Font and they are arranged either by style or alphabetically. Registration is free and lets you compare fonts.

Myfonts has a mix of free and paid-for fonts. It provides sample texts for previewing fonts, or you can use your own text.

It includes the useful What The Font tool if you have found a font in a book or in an image and would like to find a copy of it.

With just short of 10,000 fonts, Fontspace has the usual methods of finding fonts with categories. There is no need to register to use this site.
