Simple clear advice in plain English

Use Microsoft One Note

One Note is a handy tool for taking and organising notes about projects, academic work and more we show you how to get started

Editing options
The Shopping tab lets you create shopping lists and can be used to compare products by enabling you to copy prices and reviews from websites. To do this click Insert from the menu bar and then Screen Clippings. This will bring up a cursor, which will let you highlight the pieces of the website you wish to store. One Note will also store the website address and list the date and time the information was pasted.

While you can add information as we have done using the menus, you can also use the Cut and Paste commands built into Windows to transfer text and images to a One Note notebook. Another neat trick with photos from websites is to arrange the two windows side by side and then left-click on the image, holding down the mouse button while you drag it into the notebook. Release the button to ‘drop’ it into your notes. Now right-click on the image to display options for resizing and other edits.

To add a new tab click New under the File menu then select Section. You can personalise the tab by right-clicking it and picking the Section Colour or Rename option. To add a page hold down the Control key and the letter N.

Every little helps
One Note lets you tag notes, so you can organise them into categories. Click Insert from the toolbar and then choose Tag. This displays a range of icons, including a light bulb for an idea or a tick for something that needs to be done. To view the grouped tags click on the View menu option and then All Tagged Notes.
Alternatively you can search for any notes by clicking on the Search All Notebooks tool found in the top right hand corner of the screen.

One Note is a good way for people to store and organise their notes. However in terms of making it easy for people to read their notes clearly, only those who can type quickly will find it less time consuming. Those who also like to put notes into shorthand may also struggle unless they have a tablet or touchscreen PC. Nevertheless, the ability to store so many different types of information in single place makes One Note worth trying if you are studying or participating in projects.

An alternative to a paper notepad
If you still want to use One Note after the free trial but are not prepared to buy Microsoft Office Home and Student Edition, then there are a few free alternatives.

Evernote is one option. It works with Windows and although it doesn’t have all the features that One Note offers, such as being able to take screenshots of websites, it does a good job with what’s available. It also lets you arrange notes by the time they were recorded as well as enabling you to scan in and save items such as business cards.

Zoho Notebook, which lets you sign in using either your Google or Yahoo email address, lets you store text and audio as well as video. It works in a similar way to One Note, giving pre-labelled tabs for storing information on books and shopping. Like One Note it also lets people view and edit chosen pages. You can also keep track of edited pages.
