How to set up a Homeplug wired network
Q I am interested in setting up a wired network using the Homeplug system, which plugs into the power sockets in my home, as an alternative to wireless networking.
think the Devolo Homeplug system would be a good solution as I am not technical.
However, I am confused because I have an Alcatel Speedtouch ADSL broadband modem, but it only has a USB port. How do I connect this to a router?
I have a Linksys router but this has no USB input. Is there an adapter plug I
can buy or do I need a new modem?

A That particular Alcatel Speedtouch modem will not be able to connect to a router, nor will any ADSL modems that have only USB ports. If you want to connect a modem to a router or a Homeplug system, it needs to have a network port.
Unfortunately it’s not possible to buy an adapter or converter either. The Linksys router you mention might be of use – if it has an ADSL socket, you can simply disconnect the ADSL connection from the Speedtouch and plug it into this, then plug the computer into one of the network ports. You’ll need to refer to the Linksys manual for details of how to set it up for your ADSL account.
If the Linksys router doesn’t have an ADSL port, you will need to pick up a standalone ADSL modem and router. These cost as little as £30 for an unbranded device from Maplin, or a Netgear DG832 is available for £45 online. One with wireless networking built in will cost more, but since this is designed to plug into a Homeplug network, tha t won’t be necessary.
