Use the power button to shut down Vista

Keerthanen Ravichandran wants to know why Windows Vista goes to sleep when he presses the power button on his Dell Inspiron 15

Q I bought a Dell Inspiron 15 that has Windows Vista. When I press the shutdown button on the start menu it goes to sleep, but I want the computer to shut down. Am I doing something wrong?

Keerthanen Ravichandran

A To help reduce the amount of time spent waiting for the computer to start up, Windows Vista is set to go into a power-saving mode called Sleep when the power button is pressed.

The computer is not actually off, instead it switches off various bits of hardware.

Click on the Start button and then Control Panel. Click on the System and Maintenance title and then on ‘Change what the power buttons do’ in the Power Options section.

Click in each dropdown menu to select what action the computer should take when the power button is pressed. It is possible to set different actions for a notebook depending on whether it is connected to a power supply.
