Find the right drivers to run software
Q I have installed Mandriva 2007 Free after reading Computeractive articles on Linux but cannot get the 3D effects to work.
All the options for 3D effects are greyed out and cannot be selected. I did
not see any errors during installation.

A The 3D effects in Linux require the proper drivers to be installed for the graphics card in the computer. They are often left out of Linux distributions because they are not open source.
The main graphics card manufacturers, Intel, ATI and Nvidia, all produce drivers for their graphics cards. Intel drivers can be found here and Nvidia at here.
The installation process is not as easy as with Windows. You can find instructions for installing Nvidia drivers on Mandriva 2007 here. Look on our Linux forum for help on other graphics cards. You can also access our five-part Linux series free.
