Fix the Mcafee update problem

How to reverse the effects of a McAfee patch that disables networking in Windows XP Service Pack 3

q-a-logo

Q I have lost all internet access from my computer. It was working a little slowly and then a message box appeared warning of a problem with DCOM and Windows would be restarted in 30 seconds. When Windows started again neither Firefox nor Internet Explorer could load any web pages. Windows also looked different – the Taskbar had turned grey rather than the normal blue and didn’t have any rounded corners. I use McAfee Total Protection.

A An update for McAfee security software that was released on 21 April mistakenly identified an essential Windows file (svchost.exe) as malware and removed it. This breaks the internet on that computer.

The official page for consumers affected by this problem can be found here.

McAfee has produced a fix for this problem that can be downloaded from http://vil.nai.com/vil/5958_false.htm. Scroll down the page and click on the link for the file SDAT5958_EM.exe to download the fix. Copy this file to a USB memory key.

Turn on the affected computer and press F8 before the Windows loading screen appears. Select the top option, Safe Mode, in the menu that appears with the up and down arrow keys and press Enter. Plug in the USB memory key once Windows has finished loading and double-click on the fix to run it.

Restart the computer when it has finished and let Windows start as normal. Update the anti-virus software as soon as possible.

It looked fatal

Besides problems reported re change of appearance and lack of Networking and Internet, I also couldn't save files, open XL files at all or drag and drop. Was about to rebuild when I hit on Computeractive fix Thanks a million!

useless

have today 2nd October downloaded an update for my mcafee product, guess what? very slow internet intermitted with no access at all. My other half is merrily surfing away on his laptop (Norton) if they know there is a problem with this update why is it still been put out 6 months later. I have just spent ages chatting to a technician who advised me to restore default settings on my email and internet, that seemed to do the trick, it was opening at normal speed, until i logged off, and then tried to open another internet page.
