Many computer users love to try new software or investigate alternative operating systems (OS).
But such activities can carry risks: beta software can be unstable and installing new operating systems tricky.
If you’ve considered an alternative OS, such as an older version of Windows or Linux, you may have been put off by the complexity of setting up a dual-boot system to run it alongside Windows XP.
A second PC would be the solution, but short of this Microsoft’s Virtual PC is a useful, free tool, creating an emulated computer within Windows XP onto which you can safely install and play with any OS and software, without exposing your PC to problems.
