Raid is often used on external hard disks. We explain what it does
Q I have bought a Verbatim storage device that uses the Raid technology with two hard disks. Is Raid backing up my files?
Alex Donalds
A Raid is a kind of backup but it only offers protection against hardware failure in your storage device. Two disk devices normally use mirroring, where each disk is an exact copy of the other. If one disk breaks no data will be lost because it is kept on the other disk.
When a replacement disk is fitted the files are copied onto it automatically. No form of Raid offers protection from software problems or mistakenly deleting files. You should still keep the files in at least one other place, whether it is on writable DVDs or another hard disk.
