PC help: Tell AOL not to start

Use the Windows System Configuration Utility to correct a reinstall message

Q Every time my computer starts up a message box with the following text appears. ‘Error. Please reinstall AOL. You may also go to AOL Keyword Companion Help for more information. An error occurred locating the AOL Companion XML File.’ I thought I had completely uninstalled AOL from my computer.
Edward Ellis

A It sounds like the uninstall utility forgot to tell Windows AOL was no longer required and not to load it when the computer starts. Luckily the Windows System Configuration Utility makes it easy to correct.

Left-click on the Start button and then on Run. Type msconfig and then Enter. Click on the Startup tab and then uncheck any of the boxes that make any reference to AOL; click in the box so that the tick disappears. Click on OK to save the changes and close the box. A message box will appear asking you to restart to apply the changes. Close any other software, saving any work as necessary, and then click on the Restart button.

When Windows starts again a message box will appear from the System Configuration Utility as a reminder that changes have been made. If the changes have removed the AOL error message and there are no other problems, click in the box labelled ‘Don’t show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts’ so that a tick appears and then click on OK.
