Upgrade your PC's USB1 socket to USB2

Some peripherals need USB2, so here's how to upgrade your PC

q-a-logo

Q My computer is sufficiently old that it only has USB1 ports, but it does run Windows XP. I’ve been given an Ion slide and negative scanner and the instructions say it can only be used with USB2.

Just to make sure, I tried plugging it in anyway and a message appeared complaining of ‘lack of bandwidth’. Is there any way I can upgrade the computer so I can add a peripheral to overcome this problem?

A There are add-on cards you can buy that plug into the white PCI sockets inside the computer.

If you are not sure about opening the case, I would suggest you take it to a good computer repair shop, but it is really not a difficult job.
