The latest Apple iPod Nano is roughly the same size as its predecessor – Apple ditched the unpopular square design of the version before that. The big change this time around is that in addition to playing back music and video, the Nano can be used to shoot video as well.

This seems to be Apple’s response to the popularity of the Flip and Creative Vado pocket camcorders. As with those cameras, the video the Nano produces isn’t exactly broadcast-quality, but it’s impressive for such a small device.

For comparison, this video was shot with a Flip Ultra camcorder (with the same resolution of 640 x 480 pixels, not the HD model): Flip Ultra test video

You can also add effects, such as a sepia tone or a negative effect, should you want to do something like that. Since the recorded video includes audio through a built-in microphone, the iPod can also be used to take audio notes.

Interestingly, there is also a pedometer which measures how many steps you take in a day, and an FM radio. It’s not possible to record radio broadcasts, but the Nano can pause them.

The one we are looking at, in this fetching pink colour, has 16GB of storage and costs £135, but the 8GB version is £20 cheaper, and both come in a range of colours.

GOOD ALL ROUND GADGET

Extremely powerful and easy to use,but Apple missed a trick by not allowing still photo shoot. The Video quality is remakably good for such a device. I wish I could find a small case to attach to my belt, and at a reasonable price.
