Q Is there a way of reading Word 2007 DOCX files I receive via email with Word 97?

John Brown

A Microsoft released a compatibility pack for opening Office 2007 files in earlier versions but unfortunately this only works with Office 2000, XP and 2003.

The best way to open these files is to use Open Office, an open-source and free alternative to Microsoft Office.

This can open Word 2007 files and then save them in the DOC format used by Word 97. You may even find that it’s better than Word 97. Open Office can be downloaded here.
