Track down the name and version number of Windows
One of the first questions you are asked when looking for help with software is its name and version number. The name is easy to find, but the version number can be much harder.
Most programs have a summary screen with the vital statistics, so to speak. Click on the Help menu and then on About. This should make a window appear with the name of the program with the version number.
Sometimes there may even be a Build number – this is a more accurate kind of version number. Web browsers often display this information as a web page.
Finding the version of Windows you are using is a little different. In Windows XP, press the Windows key and R together, type winver and press Enter. A window should appear like the one above.
Windows
Vista users should press the Start button and type winver into the Search
box.
