A place of your own
Registering a .co.uk domain at Fasthosts costs around £3 per year. To choose a domain name open the Fasthosts website and click on the Domains tab.

Type the name you have in mind, ending in .co.uk, in the Register Domains box then click on Check.

This will tell you if the name is in use: if not, tick the box next to it and click Register Domains. If it has been taken, try again with a different name.

Next you will be asked to sign up for an account and enter you credit card details. Once this is done Fasthosts will display the domain you have chosen to register.

If you selected a .co.uk domain, it may also offer you the .com domain if it’s available. This will cost more, so untick it: all we want is the .co.uk name. Click Register Domains.

You will be asked what type of hosting you require. Choose the ‘Just Register The Domain’ option and then select ‘Use Fasthosts Nameserver’.

Complete the contact details section and then select the Yourself option on the next page. Your contact details will now be displayed.

These details will be listed as the official owner of the domain name. They will also be listed in a public database allowing anyone to search for the person owns the name.

Fortunately, .co.uk domains can be registered privately. Fill in the details, and tick the ‘Opt Out of Who is’ box at the bottom of the screen. This will leave your name visible, but hide your other details.

On the next page you are shown your domain name and the price of registering the service for two years. Check this and click Finish to complete the process.

What about SPAM?

I like the idea of having a personalised email address, but would I be opening myself up to a deluge of SPAM? The ISP filters out most of the SPAM emails that I receive at the moment.
